When you get locked out of your home or car, you likely immediately panic! Then you begin to try to figure out how to get some help. One thing that is for certain: if you get locked out once, you will do everything you can to make sure it never happens again! Hopefully with a few tips, you will never have to be in that position.

If you have younger children, it is likely that you will try to get one of them to go in through an unlocked or open window in your house. When you discover that all the windows are sealed tight, you may feel like going into a panic again.

One woman kept a ladder outside the window so she could climb up and get back into the house through a window that she left unlocked. After a burglar used the ladder to break into her house, she decided that wasn’t such a good idea.

Some people have a place outside the house where they hide an extra key. They probably decided to do that because they were locked out of the house at some time in the past. Unfortunately, there are criminal types who know that trick. They figure out where you hide the key so they can break into your home to rob you blind.

Other people will carry extra keys to their homes and cars in their wallet. That is a good solution unless you have also left your wallet inside. One man said that he keeps an extra car key under the hood of his car. The only problem with that is that he has to be able to open the hood from inside his car.

One clever idea is giving extra keys to a close relative, friend, or a neighbor who you trust. If your neighbor is usually home, you will probably get back into your house very quickly. If you are locked out of your car at the grocery store, call your friend. Invite your friend to join you at the grocery store. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to ask him or her to bring along your extra car key!

Another idea is to call a local car dealership. One man did this and the dealer had an employee bring him a key to his car. They charged him for the assistance, but he was very grateful to get back into his car.

This might work for you, especially if you happen to keep your cell phone in your pocket. If it is locked in the car, you will have to locate a pay phone.

Forget about calling the police. In most areas, they no longer come out for locked car doors. You could break a window. Then you would have to pay to replace the window. If one of your car windows is open a little, you could put a hanger in and undo the lock. Yes, it really does work.

Assuming that you do have your cell phone handy, you could call a local locksmith. That will surely cost you, but you only have to learn that lesson once. If you get locked out of your car after business hours, you may not be able to contact a locksmith until the next day.

If nothing else, you could call someone to come to the rescue. Maybe you could spend some time with a friend you haven’t seen for a while. Tomorrow you can call the locksmith. He will come and get you back into your car and into your house. Don’t forget to stop on the way home and have some extra keys made!
